Tour Overview

For those wishing to extend a stay in Europe by crossing to North Africa or just to explore this fascinating country on its own, Morocco is a microcosm of the ancient Arab world. From the Djemma-el-Fna Square in Marrakech with its barbers, snake charmers and water carriers to the labyrinths of the Fez Medina, Morocco gives a memorable experience of ancient and modern North Africa.

Standing at the western extremity of the Arab and Muslim world, it was from Morocco that Islam's most successful penetration of Western Europe, the occupation of Spain, was launched. Separated from Europe by just the 15km Strait of Gibraltar, Morocco is both a crossroad and a frontier state, one which has long held a romantic allure for Westerners. For many, its greatest charm lies in its great imperial cities: Marrakech, Fez, Meknes and Rabat. For others it is the call of the Sahara and the Atlas Mountains.

Morocco is home to an astonishingly rich architectural tradition from its mediaeval cities and its ancient Roman ruins to its Berber fortresses and Islamic monuments. We travel through the diverse countryside and explore many facets of Morocco from its rich and colourful history to the diversity of its peoples.

Golden Compass Tour Leader Hugh Morgan
Hugh Morgan

Hugh Morgan holds a BA in European History, German, Italian and Spanish from the University of Sydney and has also studied German at the Goethe-Institut in Lueneburg and Berlin, Italian in Perugia, Spanish in Salamanca and Russian in St Petersburg.

Hugh joined Qantas in 1966 and his twenty-five year career with the airline was primarily spent in sales and marketing. He was posted overseas a number of times, escorted groups and travelled widely. As Product Manager for Qantas Connections for UK, Europe and Africa, Hugh scoured his area to compile directories featuring interesting hotels, tours and attractions. His skills were recognised formally with the presentation of a bronze medal by the British Tourist Authority for exceptional services in the promotion of Britain - the first time an Australian has received this coveted award.

After leaving Qantas Hugh completed his BA whilst running a travel consultancy and has led over fifty small groups to various parts of the world. Recent tours have included Mongolia, Siberia, Russia and the Baltic States; Iberia and Morocco; the islands of the Western Mediterranean; and various journeys through Italy, the Alps and the Adriatic.

A member of the Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, the Art Gallery of NSW and the National Trust, Hugh now has more time to pursue his interest in art, architecture, archaeology, genealogy ... and travel.

This program includes placeswhich can only be explored on foot and where walking tours may be a little longer and not always on the flat. Accommodation may have some stairs and or have some rooms which may involve some walking to access.
All our programs naturally involve some walking in order to discover better the places visited and, although we arrange porterage where this is available, participants are expected to be able to handle their own bags. Our program leaders will always try to make as much of the program as possible available for those who find walking longer distances, uphill or down steps difficult but, in same places, this cannot always be avoided.
If you have any concerns at all about your level of fitness, please do not hesitate to talk to us and discuss further with the experts who know the particular demands of each program.
